What I Wish Someone Told Me

This week's insight: No one actually reads your resume - they scan for what matters in seconds.

When I worked full time in finance, I realized how busy people are on the recruiting side. Most times when someone interviews a candidate, they skim the resume for 1 minute - literally while walking to the interview room.

Imagine putting hours into your resume, and the person evaluating you only looks at it during their 30-second walk to meet you.

Most people obsess over perfecting every bullet point and crafting the perfect experience descriptions. But that's not what determines if your resume passes the scan test.

Here's what actually matters: company names and how full your resume looks.

Recruiters recognize brand names instantly. If you worked at recognizable companies, that registers immediately. For non-brand name companies, add a one-liner underneath describing what the company does. Don't make them guess.

one-liner example

Your resume needs to look completely full. No weird spacing, no half-empty lines. Every bullet should be either exactly 1 line or exactly 2 lines. If you have bullets that are 1.5 lines, either cut words to make it 1 line or add words to fill 2 complete lines.

Make Resume Bullets 1 or 2 lines, no 80% of a line

Consistency shows attention to detail. If you use periods on one bullet, use periods on all bullets. If you order one section chronologically, order everything chronologically. Pick a format and stick to it everywhere.

Inconsistent Resume Bullets

Skip the fluff. No professional objective section - they know you want the job. No address - it's 2025. If your GPA is below 3.6 for competitive finance roles, just leave it off.

Add numbers wherever possible. How many people attended your events? What percentage did engagement increase? Specific impact beats generic descriptions.

Quantify everything

Make your interests super specific. Not "sports" - pick your favorite team. Not "music" - name specific artists. These details create conversation starters.

Example: “Interests: Ethereum, Brent Faiyaz, Suya, NBA 2K, Draymond Green, Romanian Food, Pro Evolution Soccer”

The takeaway: These small changes can make your resume significantly stronger.
