What I Wish Someone Told Me

This week's insight: You're not just trying to get qualified for a job. You're trying to get de-risked as a hire.

Here's the thing nobody talks about: if I meet you today and interview you next week, that's actually a really risky hire for me. I don't know you. I have zero data points beyond a 30 minute conversations where you can say all the right things.

But if I met you 6 months ago, we've had 2 or 3 catch ups since then, and now you're going through our interview process? Completely different story. Over those months, I've collected real data. I know you follow up when you say you will. I've seen your curiosity in action. I know you're persistent but not annoying.

You can try to demonstrate these qualities during interviews, but the best way to show them is through consistent touchpoints over time.

This is why cold emails and networking actually matter. It's not about schmoozing or playing politics. It's about giving potential employers months of data points that prove you're worth the bet.

This approach literally landed me 7 internships in college and my full time private equity offer. The PE offer? Started with a cold email.

People want to hire people they know, like, and feel confident about. If you want that job, you need to become someone they know months before you need them to hire you.

Bottom line: Start building relationships now, not when you need something.
