What I Wish Someone Told Me

This week's insight: THE QUESTIONS YOU ASK YOUR INTERVIEWER WILL DETERMINE IF YOU GET THE OFFER

I used to show up to interviews with mid questions. "What does your day to day look like?"

Always ask these three types of questions:

Type 1: Personal questions

"How was the move to [city they recently moved to]?"

"If they mention kids: I know the school year is just starting, are your kids excited?"

These make the room less formal and give you details to follow up on. If they mention their dog, talk about pets. If they mention their kid, ask about schools.

Type 2: Role context questions

"What gaps do you see the junior team filling ?"

"What project are you most excited about right now?"

This is where you figure out if you actually want the job. You need to know what the day to day looks like.

Type 3: Curiosity about the business

"How do you think about [specific recent deal/product decision]?"

"What's the first thing you look at when evaluating [relevant to their role]?"

Most candidates ask about the role. You're asking about the business. It shows you did your homework.

The takeaway: mid questions = no offer
