What I Wish Someone Told Me

This week's insight: Shut up and lock in.

Everyone thinks someone else has it easier. "They go to Harvard, I don't." "They have connections, I don't." "They're at a target school, I'm not."

Everyone has advantages and disadvantages and complaining is not productive.

2025 is the most level playing field we've ever had. You can learn anything online.

You won't learn most skills in the classroom. I went to UT Austin, a solid school. But when I was recruiting for finance roles, I still had to learn most things externally.

That's where Financeable came in for me. It's like Khan Academy for finance. I used it during recruiting to learn actual modeling, valuation, how deals work. The stuff you need to know to do the job, not just pass the class.

When I showed up to interviews, I wasn't winging it. I had real skills. That's what got me offers.

The resources exist everywhere. Financeable for finance. LeetCode for tech. Case prep guides for consulting. You just have to actually use them.

Stop waiting for your school to teach you. Stop complaining. Be resourceful and go learn what you need to learn.

The takeaway: Everyone has disadvantages. The winners are the ones who stop complaining and start.
