What I Wish Someone Told Me

This week's insight: No one can help you if they don't know you exist.

You might be the smartest person in your class. But if nobody knows who you are, it doesn't matter. Hiring happens when someone thinks through people they know. If you're invisible, you're not in consideration.

Two ways to fix this:

Be public. Post on LinkedIn daily about what you're learning. Right now it's earnings season. Pick one company's earnings each day and share what surprised you. Or explain one finance concept you learned. Someone will eventually notice and reach out.

Send cold emails. Find alumni or people at firms you want to work at. Subject line: something you have in common (UT student interested in growth equity). Email: who you are, why you're reaching out, why they should talk to you, ask for 15 minutes.

Most people won't do either because it feels uncomfortable. That's your advantage.

The takeaway: Being smart in private doesn't get you hired. Be CRINGE.
