What I Wish Someone Told Me

This week's insight: Your ideal mentor is probably already in your contacts.

Freshman year, I spent six months trying to network with impressive professionals. CFOs, VPs, people with titles that sounded good.

Then I realized the most helpful people in my network were upperclassmen. People one year ahead of me in my club.

Who gives better recruiting advice? The CFO who recruited 15 years ago, or the analyst who just went through it last semester?

Who's more useful for interview prep? The VP who hasn't interviewed in a decade, or the senior who just got your dream offer?

Senior people are great for big picture perspective. But for practical advice you can use today? The person one step ahead wins every time.

The takeaway: Stop searching for the most impressive mentor. Find someone one or two years ahead who just did what you're trying to do. They're probably already on campus.
