What I Wish Someone Told Me

This week's insight: You already have an unfair advantage. Use it.

I talked to a guy who spent 6 years at Apple retail. He's getting his master's in finance and wants to do FP&A at Apple. He knows they hire junior FP&A people. He has internal access and knows the business. But he's not sending a single email.

Everyone obsesses over what they don't have. Wrong school. No connections. They see other people's advantages and think they're starting from zero.

You're not starting from zero.

Your advantages are hiding in plain sight. The company you work at. The product you use daily. Your community. That volunteer program with corporate partners. The professor who knows your name. The certification from three years ago.

You might not have Harvard. But you have something. And most people will never use what they have because it doesn't feel special enough. Close mouths don't get fed.

The takeaway: Write down 3 things you have that most people don't. Use them.
