What I Wish Someone Told Me
This week's insight: Boring People Don't Get Hired
Interviewers only remember 5-10% of the people they interview because most people are boring. They just memorize and recite answers and end up not being memorable.
Interviews aren't tests. They're storytelling opportunities.
The interviewer is thinking: "Do I want this person in the room with me?" Stories answer that.
The Mom and Dad Lore Test
Simple test: do you have stories you'd tell your future kids? Those same stories make you memorable.
When interviewers asked about my favorite college class, I said yoga instead of finance. Which one do you think they remember?
My friend got hired because he mentioned an Italian cooking class. His interviewer had taken the same class. Interview turned into a pasta conversation.
How to Build Stories
Say yes to things outside your routine:
Meet one new person weekly
Join random clubs
Try new hobbies
Volunteer for something you care about
You don't need big wins. I sold a freezer for $10 profit in high school and had to carry it across town. Terrible business move, great story lol
Don’t collect experiences for interviews. Live a life that makes stories, stories help people connect and connection gets you hired.
The takeaway: No stories, no offers.
