What I Wish Someone Told Me

This week's insight: Show them you can do the job before you get the job.

Freshman year, I wrote a short thesis on Dropbox. Simple argument: they sell a commodity, compete with tech giants, and most users don't pay.

I used that same pitch for four years of recruiting. Every interview when they asked "What makes a good business?" I had a real example ready.

Most people think recruiting is just interviews and networking. But there's a third layer almost no one uses: proof of work.

Applying for a product role? Write a one pager about their product. Finance role? Build a model or stock pitch. Put yourself in the shoes of the role and just do the work before you get there.

Right now I'm doing a Netflix stock pitch series on Instagram, teaching people to build this exact type of proof of work from scratch.

The math is simple: everyone else just interviews and hopes for the best. You show up with evidence you can actually do the job. Your only competition becomes yourself.

Most early career candidates have zero proof of work. If you have any, you're already ahead of 99% of applicants.
